Belén González will receive the Raúl Yzaguirre Community Leadership Award at this year’s event.
For over 12 years, Belén González has been passionate about philanthropy. In her current position as Program Officer with the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, Belén is responsible for reviewing grant proposals, meeting with potential grantees, conducting site visits, and monitoring and evaluating proposals. She serves on the boards of the Phoenix One Foundation and the Morrison Institute Advisory Council – Latino Research Center; serves as Vice-Chair of the Arizona Grantmakers Forum; and is Founder of the Latina Giving Circle—an organization she founded in 2009 as a way to develop generations of Latina philanthropy. Through her vision and leadership, the Latina Giving Circle not only provides financial support to nonprofits that serve the Latino community, but it also offers a place for Latinos to celebrate and honor their heritage. Belén also works with the Arizona Community Foundation to promote Hispanics in Philanthropy and has formed a funders’ collaborative to strengthen the capacities of Latino-led nonprofits. Belén’s commitment to community service, helping others and education began when she was a young mother. After having her first son at the age of 19, Belén was inspired to continue her education because she knew it was the only way she could improve their quality of life. At the age of 26, she earned a bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University, followed two years later by a master’s degree from the University of Chicago. Belén credits her mentors, who provided support and counseling, as being critical parts of her success. As a result, she never turns down the opportunity to support others in their goals to achieve a higher education.
